Introduction
February 3, 2007 I created the Leon and Mary Fields Organization after I was told I could not allow a woman and her children to have my shower slot at a local homeless service agency in Venice California. I was told “she didnt sign up”
My organization is named in honor of my grandparents and the legacy of unmatched community service they provided to the community of Santa Monica. The tradition to “be of service” was instilled in me as a small boy growing up in Santa Monica and it is with great honor and respect that I carry this legacy and tradition forward.
Do Something Saturday~that empowers people, was the first and most visible outreach of the organization. Through this outreach I asked people to care without disrespect, attitude, judgment, guilt or shame. Since I was homeless I knew all to well the harsh treatment and negative touch being offered by organizations and agencies that are in place to help homeless people.
I created a blog and a youtube channel to chronicle not just my struggles but those of others suffering at the hands of a homeless care system that is abusive, disrespectful, discriminatory, badly failing the people it is supposed to serve and in my opinion designed to fail. The blog and youtube channel were designed to give a face and a voice to people who are seen and not heard, talked about but not helped. Most importantly, the organization, my blog and youtube channel were created and designed to get people to care, inspire them to help a homeless person and to do it in love.
April 3, 2008 I was told I am HIV positive and right away I knew I was being called into action once again, still battling the harshness of homelessness I quickly learned the hardships and pain of being HIV positive and homeless. I also learned that simply because I was HIV positive didnt mean things would get any better. In fact they only got worse. I then began to work on creating an outreach for people with HIV or AIDS who also battle homelessness, low income and access to care. August 2008 I did my first outreach to men living with HIV and AIDS through the help of friends who had come to embrace my grass roots efforts. It was a complete and I was able to reach out and provide support to 15 men living with HIV and AIDS in Long Beach by offering food, gently used clothing, laundry and cleaning supplies and 15 Do Something Kits.
April 3, 2009 one year of living with HIV, I created and launched two outreaches designed to support people living with HIV and AIDS. Unpluggin HIV~empowering a positive life and Kengi's Get Tested Party. Both outreaches were a huge success
Homeless officially came to an end for me on June 29, 2009, 29 months after it began. Despite battling my many health issues, battling places that are supposed to help me navigate through homelessness and poverty, I kept fighting and working as hard as I could to be a voice for those who are suffering, a voice and role model of what is possible as long as we believe in ourselves no matter what anyone says. I kept asking people to care, not for me, but for others and the result is an organization that has been embraced by people from all over the State of California, the nation and outside this country as well.
Project KengiKat, my blog network now stands a place for people to blog and vlog their real life issues and have them not just heard, but embraced and supported by all who read them. Project KengiKat now has people who are blogging and vloggin about cancer, relationship issues, homelessness, HIV or AIDS. Real people sharing their real life experiecnes in a supportive environment.
The Do Something Saturday~that empowers people outreach to homeless people, low income families, seniors and children is well into its second year of grass roots service to those in need. Over 300 sleeping bags have been passed out, over 1000 healthy meals served, over 100 free cell phones given away. The program now offers a pen~pal program for people who are homeless as well as high profile events such as the Million Dollar Photo Exhibit that teamed at risk, low income youth from the Oakwood area of Venice up with photographers and created a one of a kind event celebrating their work complete limo ride, red carpet entrance, entertainment and catering. I've also created the Exteme MakeOver Monday for homeless people that allowed homeless men and woman a full day of spa treatment, baths, haircuts, meals, laundry service and clean clothes in a safe welcoming environment where there was no shame or judgements
Unpluggin HIV~empowering a positive life is off to a great start with outreaches to AIDS Project Los Angeles, Common Ground, Rand Schrader Health and Research Clinic at LAC~USC, as well as providing meals, genlty used clothes and Life Kits to people who are battling HIV or AIDS on the streets of Los Angeles County or in low income housing. Setember 19, 2009 the outreach will kick off the monthly outreach to men and women battling HIV or AIDS in Downtown Los Angeles on Skid Row.
The Leon and Mary Fields Organization is now celebrating over two years of grass roots community service to homeless people, low income families, seniors, children and people living with HIV and AIDS. I am proud of my community work and proud of all who have come to embrace and understand what I am trying very hard to do. Through homelessness and HIV I have learned what my calling is, what my purpose in life is and I will always work my heart and soul out for people who have no voice, who are seen, but not heard, for many men and woman who battle HIV and AIDS who poor access to service and medical attention. I do this not because of “community” but because of “HUMANITY” and because it is the right thing to do.
THE LEON AND MARY FIELDS ORGANIZATION IS NOT A NON-PROFIT, NOR IS IT A BUSINESS. IT IS A GRASS ROOTS ORGANIZATION DESIGNED TO HELP THOSE IN NEED by asking people to CARE without disrespect, judgements, shame, hurt or harm......“Connection without stigma and bureaucracy.”
