Do Something Saturday
Do Something Saturday is the first and oldest outreach of Project KengiKat. Created in 2007 to provide basic hygiene items to homeless people along the beaches in Santa Monica and Venice California, while working to raise awareness as well as restoring dignity and respect to homeless people without guilt or shame.
I started this outreach walking along the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice asking homeless people what they needed. I then blogged about it and asked people I knew to help me help others. The first large Do Something Saturday event was held in Santa Monica, where 15 people volunteered their time to help pass out bag lunches, hygiene kits, clothes and bottled water to homeless people.
Although the name implies that outreaches only take place on Saturday, Do Something Saturday takes place whenever supplies are available. Over the years Do Something Saturday has sponsored large scale outreaches and cultural event such as Baskets of Love, Extreme Make Over Monday, Easter Feast, Thanksgiving, Be My Valentine for Shriner's Hospital for Children and The Million $ Ghetto Photo Gallery for kids. Through friends and supporters, Do Something Saturday outreaches have taken place in other states and even other countries.
With the help of my awesome friends and loyal supporters, what started as a small effort to offer support to homeless people in Santa Monica and Venice, is now celebrating over three years of grass roots efforts to help homeless people which now includes outreaches to low income families, children and seniors throughout Los Angeles County.
